The Gables

27 High Street, Amersham - The Gables

Location  - on the the north side of the High Street, close to the Market Hall

ConstructionThe front elevation of the house is dominated by Dutch-style stepped gables. The house probably dates from the mid 16th century. The brick walls are rendered and painted to give the appearance of stone. There is a fine oak panelled room and two fireplaces made from Tottenhoe Stone, a type of hard chalk, with elaborate carved oak overmantles. The house was extended at the rear in the 19th century.

History of the House

Little is known about the original occupants of the house, however the imposing façade, prominent location in the centre of town and fine decoration suggest that its owner was a prominent resident.
