27 High Street, Amersham - The Gables
Location - on the the north side of the High Street, close to the Market Hall
Construction – The front elevation of the house is dominated by Dutch-style stepped gables. The house probably dates from the mid 16th century. The brick walls are rendered and painted to give the appearance of stone. There is a fine oak panelled room and two fireplaces made from Tottenhoe Stone, a type of hard chalk, with elaborate carved oak overmantles. The house was extended at the rear in the 19th century.
History of the House – Little is known about the original occupants of the house, however the imposing façade, prominent location in the centre of town and fine decoration suggest that its owner was a prominent resident.
